Magic Minute When a Bully Meets Their Match

MAGIC MINUTE // I was around nine and just turned onto the 3 m high embankment that went across the swamplands to our home when the worst possible thing happened!

Breaker Brown, the school bully, appeared from nowhere and grabbed the seat of my brand new bike. “Nice bike you got there. Get on the crossbar and I’ll give you a dink.”

He was three times my size and unpredictable.

I sat on the bar, but I was scared he’d hurt this new bike my single mum just bought me for my paper round.

He then slid off and pushed me and my cherished bike into the muddy waters below because it was funny!

Full of rage and covered in stinking black mud, I dragged myself out and straightened my handlebars.

“Cigarette?” He cheerly offered. “Uh yeah, yeah.” My mind was racing and I pretended to puff away as we walked along.

Then without thinking, I dropped that horrible cigarette into the pocket of his smart suede jacket.

Near the end of the pathway, Breaker started screaming and flailing his arms about.

I jumped on my bike and took off with a picture of him stomping on his jacket whose whole lining was now a smoldering mass of red fire.

“Next time, don’t push young kids on their new bike over the edge of something!” I yelled out.

Revenge was very sweet that day.

I’m Laurie Smale… Till my next Magic Minute.🪄
