Magic Minute Ticket to Nowhere
MAGIC MINUTE // “Wow! Working on the remote sheep station of Copley in the South Australian Outback… This is the life for me!”
So this 15-year-lad would be off to isolated Copley!
A young girl who’d been living at Copley and now working in our Italian glassware factory told me all about it!
My lovable Italian bosses were genuinely crestfallen when they learned of this, for they’d grown fond of this ‘young Aussie’ who loved their language and their food!
But it was all locked in for I’d received a telegram saying; “Come when ready.”
The following day, Lino, one of my bosses, saw me racing in on my bike and said, “You’d make a good cyclist!”
“Would I? If you buy me a new racing bike, I’ll pay you back… and I’ll stay!!”
And that’s exactly what happened.
Decades later, deep in the South Australian Outback, I came across a derelict station with a squeaking sign hanging ghost-like on a post; it read, “Copley.”
A cold shiver swept through me… “I nearly came here,” I whispered… “And thanks for the racing bike Lino!”
