Magic Minute The Disappearing Kitchen

MAGIC MINUTE // My unforgettable single mother was an uncanny version of Ma Kettle.

Like her namesake her bringing up five unruly kids in the 1960s was very rough and ready.

One day I’d slung some beetroot at my teasing brother staining the kitchen door.

And we dodged a hiding from my mother for she got sidetracked by a stroke of genius!

While at school she’d slapped a coat of pink paint over the offending door and artistically flicked it with dark green and black speckles.

“That’s fantastic!,” I enthused.

Big mistake.

The next day the whole kitchen ended up in a mesmerizing pattern of this ilk.

Even the kitchen cabinet vanished among the speckles like one of those illusurary pictures you have to stare at to make it appear again.

From then on I wasn’t so lavish in my praise.

I’m Laurie Smale… Till my next Magic Minute.
