Magic Minute Sucked Right In
On reflection, it was probably just one note wrapped around something.
Anyway, he furtively whispered, “Norval Boy in the sixth race on Saturday… put all you can on the nose!”
And with that, he slipped away
Now, I didn’t know much about horse racing, but I did know that putting money on the nose was selecting the horse to win.
And as this mysterious guy had caught my interest, I put 20 pounds on Norval boy’s nose. A lot for a humble telegram boy in those days.
And blow me down if he didn’t win! I couldn’t believe it!
‘Why isn’t everyone doing this?’ I thought. ‘Who needs to work when money can be made this easily?’
The following Saturday, I not only wagered all of these winnings on this miraculous horse, but a whole week’s wages as well!
And this time, Norval Boy showed his true colours and ran a dismal last.
Full of shame at my stupidity, since then I’ve been very sceptical about any offer that seems too good to be true!
I’m Laurie Smale… Till my next Magic Minute. 🪄
