Magic Minute Boys’ Close Call With Crocodile
MAGIC MINUTE // Figure this out… The southern state of Victoria has no tropics or crocodiles, yet me and my little brother got the fright of our lives when we came across one of these maneaters on the river flats behind our country home!
The river’s environments were an absolute wonderland for us, which drove our poor mother crazy, for in her eyes, it was a very dangerous place.
She even solicited the help of the town butcher to scare us away.
I can still see him in his butcher’s apron at the back door saying to my mum, “Yep, the river’s full of hungry crocodiles! I can see one big one climbing over the bridge from here! He’d have you for dinner!”
A few days later, we snuck down by the riverside again, and unbeknown to us, a farmer upstream had emptied a load of grass clippings onto the river.
Well, by the time it came our way, it had elongated into a 15 ft croc swimming with the current, its beady eyes, snout, and nasty teeth all heading straight for us!
“This must be the bugger that was climbing over the bridge!” I yelled. And we plowed back through that mud and reeds as if they weren’t there!
We were so shaken by this we never went near that river for… well, a good 3 days… wonder we survived the things we got up to!
