Magic Minute A Good Listener

Magic Minute A Good Listener

By Laurie Smale

MAGIC MINUTE // “Three thousand times a day we’d do it! My Italian boss Lino would be fed a blob of molten glass and press it into a pancake of mosaic tiles, then I would ‘paddle’ these cakes into the cooling oven over and over again.

But this job wasn’t mind-numbing to us, for we’d drift off into another world and talk to each other for hours about Lino’s interesting worldly travels.

Because of my inexperience, I’d simply egg him on and do most of the listening.

Lino’s English was pretty good for he’d lived in America for three years; one day he said to me, “What’s Pupello mean?”

“I don’t know, I’ve never heard of it.”

“You know, it’s the song they always sing: “For he’s a jolly Pupello?”

I burst out laughing… “It’s good fellow!” I said, and we both laughed.

Our repetetive job was never boring!

But by being a good listener, we had a lot of fun and my young mind learned much about life from my friend Lino.”

I’m Laurie Smale… Till my next Magic Minute. 🪄
