Magic Minute Not A Second To Spare
MAGIC MINUTE // “I’ll never forget the day our neighbour ran into our front yard screaming, “Mrs Smale! Mrs Smale! My baby’s choking!
It was 1954 in the back-blocks of Seaford and my single mum, a real hands-on ‘Ma Kettle”, didn’t waste a second for the toddler was now blue.
She took him by the ankles and started whizzing him around her till he was straight out horizontal.
I don’t know what poor Mrs Davidson was thinking while this was happening for it was done with an innate confidence.
Round and round they spun till a massive cough dislodged half an egg shell from his throat and he let out a plaintive cry.
His grateful mother then cradled him back with the living.
Nowadays you’d do 2-5 chest thrusts or 2-5 back thumps to release the blockage.
But this toddler was near death and there wasn’t a second to spare!
My mum’s quirky centrifugal thinking saved that little boy’s life.
I’m Laurie Smale… Till my next Magic Minute. 🪄
