Magic Minute What’s in a Name and a Sandwich
MAGIC MINUTE // Legend has it that the name ‘Sandwich’ came about by John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, wanting slices of meat between two bits of bread brought to him so he wouldn’t interrupt his gambling session!
But ‘sandwich’ can mean a lot more than just something to eat.
Take for example my classmate Lesley Sykes’s sandwiches of grades 3 and 4 at the 1950s Seaford State Primary School.
Compared to my common old jam sandwich, Lesley’s mother would lovingly make him a mouth-watering curried egg sandwich, between two pieces of delicious, freshly-baked brown bread… they were something to die for!
Each day, for the whole two years, a kind and unselfish Lesley, would quietly slip me his extra special sandwich, which I’d gratefully accept.
Of course his mum had no idea her heartfelt sandwiches were making their way to his scruffy little classmate who looked forward to devouring them each lunchtime!
So these remarkable sandwiches weren’t just bits of bread with a filling, they were scrumptious packages of kindness and joy… all we did was extend this kindness and joy a little wider.
I’m Laurie Smale… Till my next Magic Minute.🪄
