Magic Minute Teetering On The Edge
MAGIC MINUTE // My first time behind the wheel of that Wasa Jeep, a two-ton Russian relic of WWII, had me careening sideways on a gravel bend miles up in the Italian Alps.
I slammed on the brakes but it kept going, thumping to a stop with my front right wheel hanging over the edge of the abyss!
Terrified, I tentatively opened the door and crawled out.
I’d just helped my hang-gliding companions launch themselves from a breath-taking peak, miles above Bergamo and was on my way down to a pre-arranged spot to pick them up.
“What now?” I thought.
Then some miraculous angel of a guy in a big 4-wheel drive and a tow cable, pulled me back onto the road – after me figuring out where reverse was!
The Gods were with me that day for the Wasa lurched itself backwards onto firm ground,
After my heartfelt thanks, it took me hours to white-knuckle that cumbersome beast down to safety.
And this my friends, was my one and only experience as a hang-glider shuttle in the Italian Alps!
