Magic Minute Reaching For The Stars

By Laurie Smale

MAGIC MINUTE // When reaching for the stars, remember even the little ones twinkle with their own special presence.

When I was a naive 16, I said to my factory boss, Lino, “I’m going to be a famous singer!”

He smiled: “It can take years to become a big star.”

“Nah, not for me. It’s going to be easy!”

Lino was right. For the next 20 years, I threw myself into all aspects of singing lessons and stagecraft.

Always the clever personality but never the prominent star.

One day it dawned on me why all my pain and loneliness. I’d run away from school at 13 because I didn’t get it and felt the hidden stigma of being an uneducated person ever since.

So this shallow song and dance man decided to go back to school, proudly walking out of Melbourne University eight years later with his BA and diploma in education.

At long last, here I am, a wiser and educated, clear thinker with lots of life to share, comfortable in my own skin as one of those twinkling little stars.

The big difference now is it’s all about helping others shine and making the most of who they are, too.

And it’s all in my book, Finding Me, Finding You.

Till my next Magic Minute. 🪄
