Magic Minute Quirky Aussie Custom

By Laurie Smale

MAGIC MINUTE // Just about every Australian newcomer I’ve met has been thrown by the perplexing Aussie request to ‘bring a plate’ when invited to an informal gathering among friends.

Too polite to question why, these newcomers are left to navigate this quirky Australian custom as best they can.

An Italian friend of mine wondered, “Why do we have to bring a plate? Are they so poor they haven’t got any plates? And what if my plate doen’t match theirs?”

A Greek workmate even thought, “They might want to smash them like we do at our weddings!?”

Anyway, my friend Luigi decided on a nice plain white one so it would fit in.

When he tentatively gave it to his Aussie friends at the door, they burst out laughing and gave bewildered Luigi a warm hug.

“The idea is you have something on it!” They said… “Makes everyone’s life easier!”

It’s something I regularly warn newcomers to Australia about, with most of them saying, “Too late, it’s already happened!”

I’m Laurie Smale… Till my next Magic Minute. 🪄
