Magic Minute Only The Lonely Know
MAGIC MINUTE // A talkback radio caller once had me sit up and listen!
He was saying, “Feeling alone and at a loose end, I was walking along the quiet end of Melbourne’s Flinders Street when another lone figure wearing sunglasses came into view.”
Afraid of making a fool of myself, I asked. “Are you Roy Orbison?”
“Yes, I am,” the guy said, stopping to give this anxious young man the time of day, saying, “Melbourne’s new to me. Do you have some spare time to show me around a little?”
“Sure!”
Still pinching himself, they wandered around the magnificent Flinders Street Station with its clocks where people meet; then a friendly stroll across Princess Bridge for a view of the Yarra River.
Because he had a young Aussie with him, people simply took Roy for another ‘try-hard’ out for the day!
They even enjoyed a bangers and mash lunch in the iconic Young and Jackson’s pub where the infamous nude painting of Chloe hangs!
The caller recalled, “The humble empathy and kindness I experienced that day was the true mark of this great man.
