MAGIC MINUTE // In a friendly conversation I once asked a young guy what he did for a living. “I work with animals,” he said.

I immediately thought of a zookeeper or some sort of animal trainer – but he turned out to be a butcher!

He told me “If I say this up front, I always have to contend with a negative reaction which makes conversation hard work!

So that’s why I now open with my ‘working with animals’ strategy to get them thinking positive things.

Then when I reveal what I really do they laugh and it turns out to be a fun thing where we can talk about interesting ways of preparing and cooking all the different kinds of meats we eat.”

So couch whatever you do with your time in a way that makes people feel good.
