Magic Minute Behind a Book’s Cover

MAGIC MINUTE // Can you believe this? Right up till I was 22, I’d proudly announce to anyone who’d listen, “I’ve never read a book in my life!”

How misguided and sad.

Already working in a junkyard at 13, I can’t recall my struggling single mum ever reading to us kids.

So, books were something to make fun of and avoid.

This all changed the day a jungle scene on the cover of a book on a coffee table caught my eye.

I picked it up and read the title, Hold My Hand, I’m Dying by John Gordon Davis.

Intrigued, I sat down, and in my own halting way for the first time ever, began to read, and read, and read.

All that afternoon and into the night, I lived this moving story of love, of trials, sadness, and life awakening.

Sadly, the author is no longer with us, but if he were, I’d shake his hand and say, “Thank you, John. Your book took me from one who used to ignorantly scoff at books, to one who now knows the power of knowledge books can bring by broadening a narrow mind to a wider view of the world.”

I’m Laurie Smale… Till my next Magic Minute.🪄
