MAGIC MINUTE // “They say a faint heart doesn’t win fair lady. And I know it’s true because I’ve experienced the painful shame of this myself.

I once knew a beautiful French girl in my drama class who was mad about me. I’ll call her Mimi.

But too afraid and shy, I did little to make anything happen and felt safer being the resident funny man.

Oh, I had a couple of coffees with her and an afternoon at the beach, but that was it. And I simply let my chance go by.

Five years later, I’d just stopped at the lights on my bright red Australia Post Vespa when a flash car pulled up alongside me.

My heart skipped a beat.

There, beside a guy in a business suit, was Mimi.

She didn’t look happy.

Lucky for me, my helmet hid my overwhelming shame of ‘what could have been’ sitting right there next to me.

Then the lights changed and yesterday’s dream vanished, never to return.

The good news is, after many lonely years, I’m now at peace with myself and have someone to share my life with.
