Magic Minute Not Every Headline Rings True
MAGIC MINUTE // The end of the platform was whizzing past and our daredevil challenge was about to go horribly wrong.
My little brother and I were about to step off the moving train ‘the man’s way’ because Melbourne’s old trains had a running board to stand on.
“The trick is,” I told him, “you’ve got to keep your feet spinning, so when you hit the ground running, you’ll be doing the same speed as the train!
We decided Brian would go first and I’d follow him.
But to my horror, I saw his legs buckle as he skated face down along the asphalt.
Already airborne, I did the same and slammed into some bushes!
So all the focus was on Brian and they carried him off on a stretcher.
Half an hour later, battered, bruised, and delirious, I staggered into a car load of reporters in our front yard.
“Here’s another one! They cried.
My wiley mother quickly shepherded me away.
Now I don’t know what she whispered in the ear of those newspaper men, but the next day the headline in the local paper screamed: “Boy jumps out of train to save brother.”
Just be skeptical of catchy Headlines!
I’m Laurie Smale… Till my next Magic Minute.🪄
