Magic Minute The Shaky Truth of a Headline

MAGIC MINUTE // The platform was approaching fast and our daredevil challenge was about to go horribly wrong.

My little brother and I were about to step off the moving train ‘the man’s way’ because Melbourne’s old trains had a running board to stand on.

“The trick is,” I told him, “you’ve got to keep your feet spinning, so when you hit the ground, you’ll be doing the same speed as the train!

We decided Brian would go first and I’d follow him.

But to my horror, I saw his legs buckle as he skated face down along the asphalt.

Then I did the same, only I crashed through a mesh fence!

But all the focus was on Brian and they carried him off on a stretcher.

Half an hour later, delirious and covered in gravel rash, I staggered into a bunch of reporters in our front yard.

“Here’s another one! One of them cried.

My wily mother quickly shepherded me away.

Now I don’t know what she whispered in the ear of those newspaper men, but the next day the headline in the local paper screamed: “Boy jumps out of train to save brother.”

Don’t believe everything you see in a headline.

I’m Laurie Smale… Till my next Magic Minute.🪄
