Magic Minute Raking in The Eels!
MAGIC MINUTE // We whacked the ripple in the muddy swamp water with the rake, and to our surprise up came a stunned eel!
“It worked!” We cried, then waded in and got six more”
We couldn’t believe it! Kiethy Dowler was right.
We’d just seen him fish out a big one with his rod and asked him, “What do you do with it?”
“You nail its head to a post, skin in with pliers, then roll it in flour and eat it with chips… It’s just like fish.”
And away he went.
My brothers and I didn’t have a rod, but we had our rake and were doing pretty well!
When we showed our astonished mum what we’d got for dinner, she said, “Go and wash that mud off you in the dam!… Then we’ll deal with the eels.”
“We’ve got to nail their head to a post, skin ’em with pliers, roll ’em in flour and eat ’em with chips.”
My Ingenious Mum
As we had no post, my ingenious mum said we could nail ’em to the kitchen table – which made a lot of sense.
So we got to work with Kiethy’s instructions.
In the meantime, she had a great pan of chips on the go over our wood stove.
While all this was going on, the Olive’s and their five kids paid us a visit, who dived straight into all this excitement too!
And what a feast it turned out to be… and it did taste just like fish as Kiethy said!
For years, the Olives spoke of the time they paid the Smales a visit, and they were skinning eels nailed to the kitchen table!
