Magic Minute Long Held Fear Left Behind
MAGIC MINUTE // Young Johan was skating full pelt along the frozen canal to get home because darkness was now upon him.
But in the poor visibility, he crashed through a works barrier and into a hole in the freezing water. “I’m going to die!”, he thought, now beneath the thick ice and frantically seeking the hole he’d fallen through.
With seconds to spare and failing strength, he found it, and an unknown hand pulled him to safety.
Years later, he found himself with some friends at the beach in Australia. “Come on,” they said. “Let’s swim across the spit instead of walking back across the bridge!”
Johan came out in a cold sweat, for he’d never been anywhere near the water since that terrifying experience, and was now fighting for his life again in that frozen canal.
But his friends were already joyfully on their way.
Openly crying and shaking all over, Johan ran and plunged in.
Yet with every stroke he took, he left a little more of his crippling fear in his wake.
By the time he got to the other side, he told me, “I leapt out of that water like a gold medalist at the Olympics!” for his long held fear had left him.
I’m Laurie Smale… Till my next Magic Minute. 🪄
