MAGIC MINUTE // My quirky loveable mother was something else!
Widowed when she was 23 with three little boys under 4 in far away Donald, she battled through thick and thin to keep us together.
When I was around 3, something remarkable happened while my mum was boiling the washing in the copper in the back yard.
In the 1940s, most homes had a humble copper; a big fire-heated receptacle with a copper insert in which the washing would be boiled and moved around with a big stick.
I’d just found a magnificent bullfrog in a drain and proudly rushed over to her saying: “Mummy, look what I found!”
That bullfrog just looked at me and smiled, blinked his big eyes, then leapt straight into the copper!
One minute he was there, the next he was gone… and cooked!
Equally shocked, my poor mum had to explain that my newfound friend hadn’t been hurt because he’d gone straight to froggy heaven!
After a sad goodbye beneath our almond tree, I got back to our never ending quest of trying to outwit our loveable, but very cagey mother!
