Magic Minute Back With The Living
MAGIC MINUTE // With minutes to spare 19-year-old Elissa never knew the unsung hero who found her semic-conscious on the floor of her flat and dialled triple O, saving her from a deadly aneurysm.
Nor was she cognizant of her mother sitting vigil as she clung to life in intensive care with little chance of survival for 10 sad days.
But she hung in there, and with caring rehab painstakingly clawed her way back to the land of the living.
Sadly most of the artistic world she knew was now gone as she struggled to make sense of what was left, for the creative side of her brain had died.
“What is perplexing,” she told me, “is a brain injury can’t be seen for I look normal and people don’t really understand.
What’s more, I have short-term memory problems so when my mind plays tricks on me people often think I’ve had one too many! But I can now laugh at this.”
But her real savior was joining the Sing for Recovery choir and the White Horse With One Voice where she sings her heart out alongside her mum spreading hope, awareness and her unshakable love for life.
I’m Laurie Smale… Till my next Magic Minute. 🪄
