MAGIC MINUTE // I was listening to directions from a Scotsman in his thick brogue, but all I heard were meaningless sounds.
This challenge of understanding the accents and slang of others doesn’t only fall on the proud Scots.
While a German friend of mine was tending his front garden a Chinese lady stopped for a chat.
Now having lived in Australia for many years, Dieter had a comfortable command of English.
“But I had a hard time understanding her!” he told me. “So I just nodded and said yes where I thought I should.”
In the end the lady said, “Where do you come from?”
“I’m from Germany.”
“Oh,” she said. “That’s why you don’t understand English!”
But Aussies make it hard for others too, with our quirky habit of shortening our words like saying ‘Brekkie’ instead of breakfast.
I’m Laurie Smale… Till my next Magic Minute. 🪄
