Magic Minute It’s What The Locals Say

MAGIC MINUTE // It’s always a bit of a challenge to fit into a different environment when you’re new to it all.

An American primary school teacher new to Australia was telling me, “In the staff room at morning tea a young grade three student came over and said: “Would you like a bickie with your cup of tea?”

“Oh I’d love one! But we don’t say bickie, we say biscuit. You’re a big girl now and that’s baby talk.”

That afternoon in the staff room, the principal who was a tall imposing man but very likable, was doing his rounds of catching up and getting to know the new staff members.

When he got to our American friend he proffered a bowl of biscuits and said, “Would you like a bickie?”

“My god!” she thought, “They’re all doing it!”

I’m Laurie Smale… Till my next Magic Minute. 🪄
