MAGIC MINUTE // No matter what you’re doing, there’s always a more effective way of approaching it, even shovelling dirt!

I’d just joined a gang of laborers preparing formwork for footpaths and got straight into madly shovelling the dirt to clear the way and show ’em how good I was.

When an old geezer behind me said, “Hey mate, if you keep that up you’ll soon run out of puff!

The idea is, you gotta take it easy and be clever like the Egyptians.

Rest your shovel on your thigh like this, then use your body weight to fill your shovel with a nudge like this… Then pull the full shovel back, then the shovel’s own volume and momentum will help you sling the dirt to the side.”

Wow! This gem of a tip made my life a lot easier.

From that day onwards I’ve always been open to cleverer ways of doing things. .
