Context and Timing Yeah everyone please welcome Laurie.
Thank you Les.
For many years I’ve been helping people to believe in themselves and overcome their fear of public speaking because I used to be like that.
And uh when we had a challenge. I prepared four minutes.
You know that’s pretty tough to within the framework. Now it’s three and a half!
So here’s what I do to make it like a little package of uh a work in itself. A work of art in itself.
This little presentation and that’s what our little talks have got to be. An entity unto themselves.
So it’s a good thing to start off with a context. So if I was going to use my book, “How to take the Panic out of Public Speaking!”
I’d give it a couple of little by lines like and have your audience feel comfortable in your presence and feel like you’re talking to them personally.
Because that’s really, that’s sort of the essence of making them feel like a two-way conversation between you and them.
And then I would share a snippet out of that book. Now I would be very tempted to to read a great big package so I’ve got to time it.
I’ve got to time it at home. The little introduction and the snippet.
So I might have to precis it a little bit like like Ellen did just take us along a little bit and then share the heart of the matter.
And something else I do, six days before I give the presentation like this one, I will spend a few minutes rehearsing it with a clock in front of me. Not word for word. Not parrot fashion, but just the ideas.
The reading yeah that’s different. And then we’re all ready to go.
So I’m going to show you that in a little package now with one of my Laurie Smale YouTube Magic Minutes.
I’ll give you the title. The title is “Do I really know this person?”
I was once at an Aussie rules football match with the local Town Planner, Ian Port.
Now Ian was a sort of a likeable chap, and there we were in a corporate box with some other business folk drinking a glass of wine over our lunch.
And he was, you know, like I said, likeable but he still had this air about being the town planner.
And his beloved team the Bulldogs were coming up against their arch rivals Melbourne,
What a game it was.
With the Bulldogs kicking the winning goal in the dying minutes and then pandemonium broke loose and they started blaring the theme song.
Then sedate Ian Port, the town planner of the Box Hill Council leapt onto his chair and started screaming out the Bulldog’s theme chant at the top of his voice.
“Doggy doggy doggy, woof woof woof!” It was hilarious!
And I thought I knew this sedate man!
So we could never tell what’s behind that what we think is the personality.
So there it is in a nutshell. A little interesting tableau forced upon me because they give us a time constraint.
But that’s what we got to do. Thank you.
Thank you Laurie. Amazing energy and presence. It’s awesome!
