Laurie Smale, Let me just turn the microphone off no um it’s private conversation Everyone please welcome Laurie who has a story Finding Me Finding You.

Thank you very much. This is my first evening here and I find it fascinating.

I um I’m the create Creator and Author of my Magic Minutes series on YouTube and all the other platforms that are available.

Nine months ago I knew nothing about social media but Sue Ellson has introduced me to a whole new world and I’m excited about it.

I’m 78 I’m like Grandma Moses I’m starting off something new I’ve had decades of writing and stuff before that but then I had a hiatus of about 10 years and so this is quite exciting for me to be here tonight.

I’ve written three books one of them is called ‘How to take the panic out of public speaking,’ the other one is called ‘How to be a conversational success’ and the one I’m going to talk about tonight briefly, I don’t want to go down the trap door, is called ‘Finding Me Finding You’ it’s an exciting journey about overcoming insecurity and self-doubt.

And this, notice on the front it’s got a butterfly. He’s only half formed.

Well that there used to be me. For decades of my life until I I I found found me and uh it came about because I’m a late starter. I got married when I was 44. My kids came along and when they were teenagers they had their Dad, who was me Daggy Dad and they didn’t believe that I could have done anything interesting in my life. When I drop a little snippet here, a little snippet there, they’d say,
‘Yeah, get real Dad.’

So I decided to write a book about myself. So I did and I started and as I wrote I thought, this is interesting. I’ve got a I’ve got a story here and I wondered why I felt insecure all my life and it came out I was always on the move. Always running away.

Right up until I was nudging 50 and I found out that I I’d lived in a little country home, no water, no electricity, five kids, a widowed mother, lots of fighting, uh not much love.

I was out there working in a junkyard when I was 14. I worked in factories for 15 years after that. Maths tormented me. It tormented me for decades more. No-one knew about this. All they saw was this bubbling personality and someone that achieved things and I did achieve a lot. I was on a a show called Showcase which is like the fore-runner of The Voice. 1968 and the’ 70s and I was on that sitting next to Hector Crawford.

I’ve I’ve done just about everything you could think of in my journeys, even even taking trips up to Scandinavia specializing in the Vikings for three years. I even lost one of my tourists at Checkpoint Charlie in East Germany which was terrifying,

To find out what happened, you’ve got to read the book!

And, now I stand here today after after this interesting journey and um I’m okay now. The butterfly has got both wings he might be colored but he can fly beautifully.

So I’d just like to read this brief concluding remarks of this marvelous little book that I’m very proud of. After all these years, I’m now fine with where I’ve been and what I’ve learned about myself. I realise I can’t have a re-run of my life and have another run at what I know now.

So whatever you do, be comfortable with yourself. Be comfortable with where you’ve been. Be comfortable with where you’re at and be comfortable with where you’d like to be.

This in mind, I’ll leave you to contemplate Ralph Waldo Emerson’s wise and timeless words. Make the most of who you are because that is all there is of you. Thank you [Applause]

Wow thanks Laurie, that’s really motivational um George Elliott you also had a really good comment, ‘It’s never too late to be what you might have been’ which just sort of says you know you can still do whatever you need to do regardless of age not that your age but um…

SPEAKING // I spoke at the 🕊️ Busybird Publishing Open Mic Night #102 🎤 recently about my three books 📚, a little bit about my personal story and a reminder from my book ‘Finding Me, Finding You’ to be comfortable with yourself, be comfortable with where you’ve been, be comfortable with where you’re at and be comfortable with where you’d like to be – and I did all that in just five minutes!
