MAGIC MINUTE // Lasting Christmas Message – Hi I’m Laurie Smale

There must be a more sensitive way of handling this sad news I thought.

I knew this kindly man.

A Christmas card appeared on my postman’s desk with the word deceased scrolled across it in red ink and the system required I stamp it Return to Sender.

Instead I replaced the insensitive envelope with a note of my own “Sadly, Mr Jones died peacefully in his sleep four weeks ago. Laurie, Postman South Yarra Post Office.”

I popped this in the mail and thought no more about it.

Weeks later, I received a heartfelt letter from Canada thanking me for my kind words regarding the loss of their dear friend.

I just stood there, moved beyond words.
