MAGIC MINUTE // ‘Junkyard Treasures’ – Hi I’m Laurie Smale.
When I was 13, I found refuge from my school maths torments in old Bill Menzie’s junkyard.
There my fertile mind discerned the difference between scrap metal and precious metals and true junk from expensive antiques.
But what I really enjoyed were old Bill’s enthralling stories by the fireside.
Like the 1908 heavyweight boxing match between the black contender Jack Johnson and the Canadian world champion Tommy Burns.
“Come on Tommy, what are you afraid of?” Johnson taunted, while thousands screamed them on.
I loved it.
Old Bill’s worldly wisdom enriches me still.
For when watching the Antiques Roadshow I’m still back among the wonders of that junkyard.
