MAGIC MINUTE // What have train drivers and surgeons got in common?
Well, on a recent train trip to picturesque Williamstown with an avid train enthusiast, something happened.
On our arrival my friend said, “Let’s see if we can catch a word with the driver before he changes ends for his return journey.”
Then the door opened and out stepped a confident young woman smartly dressed in her train driver’s uniform.
This wasn’t what we’d expected. :
“Oh we feminine train drivers and surgeons get this all the time,” she said in response to our pleasant surprise.
“We’re always expected to be a man.”
Then with a friendly, “Right now I’ve got a train to drive back to Melbourne!” she left us to ponder our outdated assumptions.
