MAGIC MINUTE // “Peace and Harmony” Hi I’m Laurie Smale.

In the summer of 1955, 15-year-old Jill bravely boarded a small plane for a memorable holiday in Germany with her pen pal Hilda.

In spite of the war, Jill felt no ill will towards German people for she’d been brought up this way. In Frankfurt, a kind lady helped Jill get on the right train to meet her pen pal and safely there she found a family struggling to survive the war, which had taken Hilda’s Dad.

Jill fondly recalls “I especially liked her mother’s delicious potato cakes and in the forest we kids would race around bomb craters on our bikes which my mother never knew about.”

Now 83, Jill wonders why we can’t all live in harmony without these awful wars…
